It’s not enough that they (okay, we, since I’m in the biz) are tracking where you go and what you do, but not they/we want to understand your motivation. Harvard Business Review has a nice intro by venture investor Anthony Tjan of Cue Ball: http://tr.im/nkGe
One tip: “…a technique we used at Thomson Reuters
called the three-minute rule; we observed what users were doing three
minutes before and three minutes after each interaction with the
product.”

My thoughts on this are three part, first off if everyone plays fair, this type of practice will be “win win” for all partys involved, that’s if the information farmed, is delegated pointedly “for” the prospective buyers. and really, why would anyone go to all that effort to see folks go shopping for merchandise or look at porn? I feel that a lot of folks just are not hip to how all this works, & if they were it would be “win win” or the targets could upraise and send the marketing efforts on many a goose chase, never opt in, always opt out, Privately browse, and the list goes on. personally i have many great experience’s being tracked with cookies, information just falls into my lap i never would have found just searching with an engine. bottom line for me is “hey what a borring thing, tracking people? that would drive me nuts…. talk about the lights not turning green- Lets GO I would rather watch grass grow then track folks lost and scarred on the internet, my guess is 1 in maybe 35 might intrest me, unless you “think” you need to hide, there are many ways to pass GO undetected – so roam free people, “put your lights on & be aware with what you play – it’s like a anything” – if you are going somewhere of major interest meaning a couple company’s track your movement & want to help YOU by finding what you want and putting it in your lap, these very tools probably have something to do with it.
there are people who want to take your birthday away, it is not something most these folks are very good at from what I have seen. I would never put my credit info on a computer too camp out… if I did I still feel it is much safer doing business on a computer than it is going to your local merchant and handing over credit information to mr. $8.00 /hr guy who is possibly stuck in life with no means out. Bottom line here please do a little homework, use a prepay credit card – they are disposable and very easy to get, understand at least basic transaction path & how the technoledge works, this will give you the power of awareness, making YOU the driver of your own destiny! understanding how it works will exposed most lame efforts used by the birthday bandits… {Hint: an easy way to learn and understand all of this techno stuff, would be to learn how it works by using the very medium to do so, this type of information will be very easy to find & a great place of learning for one’s who are not hip to the year 2000 :-O)
